What would you say if I told you that you could spend 48 hours in Cairo without leaving the city limits? Well, that’s exactly what we did. And we had a blast!
Cairo is one of the oldest cities in the world and has been inhabited since 4000 BC. It was once called the City of Pharaohs because of its rich history. Today, it’s considered one of the safest cities in the Middle East.
We spent our time exploring the old town, visiting the pyramids, shopping at Khan el Khalili Bazaar, and enjoying some delicious Egyptian food. If you want to experience Cairo like never before, check out our itinerary below.
Day 1
Our first day in Egypt started off with us flying from Istanbul to Cairo. Our flight took about 7 hours (with stops).
We landed in Cairo at around 12:30 PM local time. Given that this was an overnight stay, we didn’t have too much of a plan for our first day in the city. But immediately after we arrived, we went to the hotel.
After dropping our bags, we walked down the street towards Tahrir Square, also known as Liberation Square. There are two things I should mention here – the traffic in Cairo is very confusing no matter where you go. We got used to driving on the wrong side of the road, but it made everything easier when we actually knew which way we needed to go.
The other thing is that people in Egypt don’t use headlights all the time. They’re turned on when they need them so that’s why there were still cars parked along the sides of the streets.
After walking around for a while, we decided to head back to the hotel. When we reached the square, we saw that there was going to be a huge protest happening there. We watched for a little bit before deciding to leave.
One of my favorite parts about traveling alone is meeting new people who share your passion for travel. That’s how I met Danae, a Greek girl who lives in London. She travels to different countries every month looking for work. Her goal is to visit 100 countries before she turns 30.
I love her story because she is constantly striving to accomplish something bigger and better than the last. It makes me feel good knowing that I can continue to grow and learn throughout life.

Day 2

Cairo tower
Once on the opposite side of the bridge, it is just a short walk to the Cairo Tower. This is a great place to view the Nile River and the surrounding area. There are many restaurants and shops nearby if you get hungry or thirsty.
The Cairo Tower is located right next to the Pyramids of Gizah. If you plan to see them, this would be a great time to do so.
